Currently, I'm teaching Spanish language and culture to Spanish heritage speakers from Colorado (US) at STRIVE Preparatory Schools. STRIVE Prep is a Denver-based community public charter schools committed to providing every student with an excellent, high-quality, college-preparatory education. A very large percentage of students are Mexican descend, and my job as an educator is to help them improve their reading and writting skills, and learn about the Hispanic culture all around the world.
As a Spanish language teacher, being able to work with the Latino community in Colorado is really a great opportunity. When I was in grad school, I had the desire to embrace the local Hispanic comunity, and right after obtaining my Ph.D. in Hispanic Litrature (in Fall of 2017) I set as a goal to work with the Spanish heritage populationin Colorado.
This past year, I develop a telecollaboration project to connect heritage high schoolers from Colorado with high schoolers in Leon, Spain. My students had the great oppotuniy to talk and interact with Spanish speakers form another country, which also helped them expand their understanding of the Hispanic community at large.
The opporutnity to work with the Latino population in the US is a unique experience that has helped me broaden my perception of the richness and diversity of the Hispanic world.
